Car Rental for Expats in Qatar: A Monthly Rental Guide for New Residents
Moving to Qatar involves a long list of decisions: where to live, how to commute, when your residency paperwork will be completed and whether buying a vehicle makes sense. A car can make daily life easier, but buying immediately is not always the best first move. For many new residents, a monthly rental creates a useful middle ground between relying on individual rides every day and making a longer financial commitment before their routine is clear.
Infinity currently markets daily, monthly and long-term rental options and states that its rental proposition includes insurance, maintenance and 24/7 support. The exact terms attached to a particular booking still need to be checked in the final quotation and rental agreement. [8]
Why monthly rental can work during your first months
A new resident may not yet know the final location of an office, home, school or regular client meetings. A monthly car gives you time to learn your real driving pattern before deciding whether you need an economy car, sedan, SUV or larger family vehicle.
It also separates the mobility decision from the ownership decision. Instead of asking, “Which car should I own for the next several years?”, you can first ask, “What vehicle do I need for the next month or few months?” That is particularly useful when an employment assignment, accommodation or family arrival date may still change.
Monthly does not automatically mean cheaper in every circumstance. Compare the total package, not only the advertised monthly figure. Providers in Qatar structure monthly products differently: published plans in the market vary in mileage allowance, insurance, maintenance, roadside assistance, deposit rules, delivery and cancellation conditions. [9]
Check your driving-licence status carefully
Your immigration status and your driving entitlement are related but not identical. Qatar’s Ministry of Interior says a visitor holding a valid international driving licence may drive for up to six months. It also says qualifying visitors holding a valid GCC-country licence may drive for up to three months, with the entry date verified from the passport. Hukoomi notes that Qatar residents can apply for a Qatar driving licence. [10]
Do not assume a licence arrangement that was valid when you entered as a visitor remains the correct arrangement after your residency status changes. Before extending a rental, confirm your current eligibility with the rental company and, where necessary, the relevant Qatar traffic authority.
Read the monthly contract before focusing on the car
Ask what the monthly fee includes. Confirm the mileage allowance and excess-kilometre charge, insurance type and excess, security-deposit method, maintenance procedure, roadside-support process, replacement-vehicle policy, additional-driver rules, extension procedure and early-return terms.
This matters because “monthly rental” is not a single standardized product. For example, one Qatar operator publishes a 5,000-kilometre monthly allowance, while other monthly subscription products publish different allowances depending on the car and package. Those are examples of provider variation, not Infinity terms. [11]
Choose the car around your actual routine
A compact or economy vehicle may make sense for a solo commute and mostly urban driving. A sedan can provide additional comfort for longer regular journeys. Families should think about rear-seat use, child-restraint needs and luggage rather than simply choosing by vehicle name. If seven seats are genuinely required, Infinity’s current public fleet lists several seven-passenger automatic vehicles, although a particular model should never be promised until availability is confirmed. [12]
Also separate paved-road SUV needs from desert driving. Qatar Tourism notes that some more remote attractions require a 4x4; that does not mean a rental agreement automatically allows off-road use. Always check the rental contract before taking any rented vehicle away from permitted roads. [13]
When should you move from monthly to long-term?
Monthly rental is useful when your time horizon is still uncertain. Once you know that you need a car for a considerably longer period, compare Infinity’s monthly and long-term options rather than automatically renewing the same arrangement.
Ask for the total cost across your expected period and compare mileage, services, flexibility and early-termination conditions. The best choice is the contract that fits how long you actually expect to stay and how much you expect to drive—not simply the option with the lowest-looking monthly number.
For a new resident, that makes monthly rental a planning tool as much as a transportation product: it lets you become familiar with Qatar before locking your mobility decision into a longer commitment.
