Insurance is one of the most important aspects of renting a car. It gives you financial protection and peace of mind while driving in a foreign country. In Qatar, rental cars come with basic insurance by law, but it’s crucial to know what is covered, what isn’t, and what optional coverages you might need. Infinity Rent a Car Qatar explains the various insurance options and terms so you can make an informed decision.
By default, every rental car in Qatar comes with basic insurance coverage. This usually includes:
Third-Party Liability (TPL): This covers damage or injury you cause to other people or property with the rental car. If you accidentally hit another vehicle or a pedestrian, the insurance pays for their damages/medical costs up to a certain limit. This is mandatory coverage included in the rental rate.
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW): Most rental rates include a CDW, which isn’t insurance per se, but an agreement that the rental company waives some of the cost of damage to the rental car in exchange for you accepting a deductible (also called an “excess”). For example, a CDW may make you only responsible for the first QR 2,000 of damage, and anything above that is covered by the company’s insurer. If the car is stolen (very unlikely in Qatar) or totaled, LDW would similarly limit your liability to the excess amount.
The Excess/Deductible: This is the maximum amount you pay out of pocket for damage to the rental car under basic coverage. It can range from a few hundred to a few thousand Qatari Riyals, depending on the car class and company. For economy cars, it might be around QR 1,000–2,500. For luxury cars, it could be much higher.
Important: If any damage occurs to the car, you are liable up to that excess amount. If repair costs are less than the excess, you pay the actual repair cost. If more, you pay the excess and insurance covers the rest. However, damage due to negligence or violation of the rental agreement (e.g. driving off-road when forbidden, or drunk driving) can void coverage, making you fully liable.
Pro Tip: Always ask what the deductible amount is when you rent. Infinity Rent a Car is transparent about our excess amounts, so you’re not caught off guard in case of an incident.
To enhance protection, you can usually purchase additional insurance options:
Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW) / Excess Reduction: By paying an extra daily fee, you can reduce the deductible or even eliminate it. For instance, adding SCDW might lower your excess from QR 2,000 to zero. This means if the car is damaged, you don’t pay anything (or pay a token report fee) as long as it’s under normal circumstances. This extra cover basically buys out your financial responsibility. It’s more expensive for higher-end cars.
Theft Protection: Often bundled with CDW/LDW, this covers the car being stolen. Qatar has a very low car theft rate, so this isn’t a big concern, but it’s there. Check if theft is already included or requires separate coverage.
Personal Accident Insurance (PAI): This covers medical expenses and accidental death benefits for the driver and passengers in case of an accident. If you have travel insurance or health insurance that covers injuries, you might skip this. But if not, PAI can provide compensation for injury to you or your passengers. It’s usually a low daily cost (and sometimes included by Infinity for free as part of service).
Personal Effects Coverage: This covers theft or damage of personal items in the car (like luggage). Again, Qatar is quite safe regarding theft from cars, but if you’re carrying valuables, note that they aren’t covered by vehicle insurance. Your travel or home insurance might cover them. Personal Effects coverage through a rental is not very common here, but some companies offer it.
Roadside Assistance Plan: Infinity provides basic roadside help for all renters (e.g., if you have a breakdown, we assist). But some companies sell an extra plan that covers things like tire damage, lost keys, or battery assistance without charge. Check what the rental includes. For example, changing a flat tire might be chargeable if you call help without this cover, whereas with it, it’s free.
Pro Tip: Credit Card Coverage – Many credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Amex) offer rental car damage insurance if you pay for the rental with the card. This can often cover the CDW deductible or even act as primary coverage. However, make sure it’s valid in Qatar and understand the terms (you may have to decline the rental company’s CDW for the card coverage to apply, which means you’d be fronting any damage cost and claiming later). It can save you money, but use it only if you’re comfortable handling a claim yourself back home.
Regardless of insurance, there are typically exclusions – things the coverage won’t pay for:
Damage to Tires, Windshield, Undercarriage in Single-Car incidents: Many basic insurance plans exclude things like tire punctures, cracked windshields, or undercarriage damage unless caused by a collision. If you, say, curb the wheel or get a flat due to hitting a pothole, you might have to pay for a new tire. Some SCDW plans or roadside assistance packages cover these, but ask specifically.
Negligence or Rule Violations: If you were driving recklessly, under the influence of alcohol/drugs, off-roading without permission, or otherwise violating the rental agreement, insurance can be voided. That means you’d be responsible for the full cost of damage. Always drive responsibly and within allowed areas.
Lost Personal Items: As mentioned, if your phone or camera is stolen from the car, the car insurance won’t cover it. Secure your valuables or take out separate coverage.
Interior Damage: Stains, burns (from smoking, which is usually prohibited in rentals), or tears in upholstery typically aren’t covered by CDW. You’d be billed for cleaning or repairs. Avoid eating messy foods in the car and definitely no smoking.
Key Loss: Losing the key or locking it inside the car is usually not covered. Replacement keys for modern cars are expensive (could be 500-1000 QAR or more). Some roadside assistance covers lockout service but not key replacement cost.
Using the Wrong Fuel: If you accidentally put diesel in a petrol car or vice versa, that damage is on you – insurance won’t cover that kind of misfueling damage. Always double-check fuel type (it’s usually indicated on the fuel cap or by the rental agent).
If you do have an accident or damage:
Police Report: In Qatar, any accident (no matter how minor) must be reported to the police to get an official report, which is needed for insurance claims. If it’s a minor scrape with no other car involved (like you scratch a pillar in a parking lot), you still should get a police report by driving to the Traffic Department or calling police non-emergency line. Without a police report, the insurance will not cover damages and you’ll be liable for the cost.
Contact Rental Company: Inform Infinity Rent a Car (or your provider) immediately if an incident occurs. We can guide you through the steps. For breakdowns or non-accident issues, we also want to know to assist or replace the vehicle if needed.
Accident form: Fill out any accident report form the rental company provides. Provide all details truthfully.
Charges: If you took basic insurance, the maximum you pay is the excess. That will usually be charged or withheld from your deposit until repair costs are finalized. If you took SCDW (zero excess), and the claim is approved by insurance (with police report), you shouldn’t have to pay anything (again, assuming no violation of terms).
Pro Tip: Drive carefully and park in safe areas. Avoid aggressive driving culture – better to be patient than risk an accident in a foreign land. Use parking sensors/camera and mirrors to avoid low-speed bumps, as those can still cost time and money to sort out.
It depends on your comfort level:
If you’re risk-averse or unfamiliar with local driving, getting the full coverage (to eliminate your liability) can make your trip stress-free. You won’t worry about minor scratches or bigger issues financially.
If you’re confident and perhaps have coverage via your credit card or travel policy, you might decline some extras. Just remember you’ll have to handle claims if something happens.
For expensive cars, consider at least reducing the excess. For economy cars, the standard excess is not too high for many people to handle if needed.
Infinity Rent a Car Qatar always recommends at least a basic understanding of what you’re responsible for. We never want our customers to face unexpected expenses. We offer optional coverage clearly and never pressure-sell — it’s your choice to balance upfront cost vs. potential risk.
Car rental insurance can seem complicated, but knowing the basics—what’s covered, what’s not, and how to protect yourself—goes a long way in ensuring a smooth rental experience. Always read the rental agreement’s insurance section, ask questions, and make choices that let you enjoy your drive without worry.
With Infinity Rent a Car Qatar, you’re in good hands. We maintain comprehensive insurance on all our fleet and are upfront about your responsibilities. Our goal is to provide not just a car, but peace of mind as you explore Qatar.
Safe driving!

1️⃣ Is basic insurance included in the rental price?
Yes, basic insurance (including third-party liability and a standard CDW with an excess) is included in all rentals by law. You do not have to pay extra for the mandatory coverage. However, the included coverage will have a deductible (excess) that you are responsible for if the car is damaged.
2️⃣ How much is the typical deductible on rental cars?
It varies by vehicle class and company. On an economy car, it’s often in the range of QR 1,000 to QR 2,500. On a luxury car, it could be QR 5,000 or higher. When renting, you can ask: “What’s my liability if there’s damage?” and they’ll tell you the excess amount.
3️⃣ Does insurance cover scratches and dents?
If the scratches/dents happen during your rental (and were not pre-existing), they are considered damage. They would fall under the CDW: if you have an excess, you’d be charged up to that amount for repair. If you took zero-excess coverage, then small scratches would typically be covered. Always note pre-existing ones on pickup inspection so you’re not blamed for them.
4️⃣ What if the accident isn’t my fault? Do I still pay the excess?
By procedure, if the rental car is damaged, you might initially be charged up to the excess. However, if the police report and insurance claim determine the other party was at fault and their insurance pays for the damages, the charge can be refunded to you. In Qatar, if another driver is 100% at fault, their insurance should cover your damages (through the rental company), meaning you shouldn’t ultimately pay. But this process can take time, so sometimes the rental will charge you and later refund once they recover from the at-fault party. Infinity tries to handle these fairly – if it’s clearly not your fault, we work to get our insurance to recover costs so we can reimburse you.
5️⃣ Do I need to get a police report for a tiny fender-bender?
Yes, absolutely. Even for a minor incident like a fender-bender or a scrape in a parking lot, Qatari law requires a police report for any vehicular damage if an insurance claim is to be made. Without a report, the insurance won’t process the claim, meaning you’d be liable for the full repair cost. Even if it’s a single-car incident (like you hit a curb and damage the bumper), you must report it. It might seem like a hassle, but it’s the only way to officially document what happened. When in doubt, call the police or at least call us at Infinity for guidance on how to get a report (sometimes for very minor things they’ll direct you to a traffic department branch to file it).
